Dental Ozone

Dental Ozone

Ozone (O3) is a naturally occurring, a transient excited form of oxygen that occurs when solar energy or lightning interacts with oxygen.  In the upper atmosphere, Ozone primarily protects the earth from damaging UV light.  It is a powerful oxidant and has many beneficial uses in medicine and industry.

Ozone creates a therapeutic transient oxidative burst naturally kills disease-causing bacteria, virus, fungi, yeast, and parasites.  In our bodies, ozone produces antioxidants that stimulate natural immune defenses, promote healing, and improves blood flow.  Ozone is an ideal disinfectant since it is safe to oral tissues and may be applied as a liquid (ozonated water) or gas to kill oral microorganisms on contact.

In dentistry, Ozone has proven beneficial in treating gum disease, tooth decay, and oral infections which are all caused by bacteria. In our office, ozone is routinely for dental cleanings, gum disease therapy, cavities, operative dentistry, oral surgery, disinfection of oral appliances and retainers, and sterilization of surfaces and equipment.  We also use ozonated oils in a custom-fitted PerioTray®  to directly apply this concentrated antimicrobial to the teeth and gums for treatment of periodontal disease and tooth decay without the unwanted side effects of pharmaceutical drugs and antibiotics.
